Thermally toughened glass

Click to enlarge A special high-temperature treatment is necessary to transform a standard glass to a particular glass, the thermally toughened safety glass. The heat-resistance as well as the impact and bending strength can be improved by a factor of 3. In addition, a very unique property results: In case the glass breaks it will break into many small and blunt pieces. This effect reduces the risk of injury.

Click to enlarge We apply the toughening process to float glasses, patterned glasses, coloured glasses and even to borosilicate glasses. Thermally toughened glasses can be decorated by different printing techniques.

Thermally toughened safety glasses are used in luminaires, cars, doors, facades, furniture, and appliances and a good deal more. The fields of applications are almost unlimited.

The highest degree of safety can be achieved by applying the "heat soak test" to thermally toughened safety glass: In some rare cases, thermally toughened glass can break spontaneously without any visible reason. The heat soak test, which can be carried out additionally, sorts out the risky glasses.
